Mentoring Mentoring Program

What is a Mentor?

The word originates from Homer’s Odyssey.  When Odysseus went to fight in the Trojan War, he left his son Telamachus in the care of his friend Mentor, who was responsible for guiding and safekeeping his son while he was away. 

Raising people to a higher level and helping them succeed involve more than just giving them information and skills.  If that were not the case, every child would be successful whenever he/she learned something new at school. 

Success does not automatically follow knowledge.  A mentor stimulates and supports the mentee’s growth in character and competence. At one time or another, a mentor may take on many roles, including those of

  • Friend

  • Guide

  • Listener

  • Nurturer

  • Trusted confident

  • Tutor

  • Motivator

  • Advisor

  • Encourager

  • Advocate

  • Instructor

  • Career advisor

  • Companion

  • Role model

  • Sounding board

  • Skill builder

  • Coach

  • Cheerleader

Though a mentor may be a role model, a mentor does not ask his or her mentee to “be like me.”  A mentor helps the student become the person they choose to be.  They encourage the person as they grow and mature, providing support, guidance, and a positive perspective on life.

The mentor provides the student with someone:

  • Who cares about them

  • To help put their problems in perspective

  • To help them define short and long-term goals

  • They can trust to keep their conversations confidential

  • Whom they respect and who respects them

  • Who encourages them to think positively about themselves

  • Who is there for them

  • Who listens without judgment

  • Who helps them see other options

  • Who encourages them to think constructively and positively about the future

Some tasks of the mentor include:

  • Establish an open, friendly, and trusting relationship with the student

  • Help the student develop life skills

  • Provide the student with new possibilities

  • Increase the student’s ability to interact and communicate
